whiskey (スコッチは whisky と綴られることが多い) は、16世紀に借入された usquebaugh が whiskybae に変形され、さらに bae が省略されたものである。 usquebaugh は古アイルランド語の uisce (水)と bethu (生命)に由来する語であるから、ウィスキーは本来は、フランス語の eau de vie （ブランディ等の蒸留酒）や北欧語の aquavit （蒸留酒の一種）と同じく「生命の水」であるが、いつの間にか「生命」が消えて、ただの「水」になってしまった。

ところで、酒が「生命の水」とされた理由としては、陶酔をおこす力があるからとか、気つけ薬に使われたからとかが考えられている。しかし、 命名のおおもとには「お酒は神様の贈物」という考え ( こじつけ？) があったようである。以下は、新約聖書の中に見られる「生命の水」という表現の例である。

Jesus answered, “Whoever drinks this water will get thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring which will provide him with life-giving water and give him eternal life.” (John 4-13,14)

“To anyone who is thirsty I will give the right to drink from the spring of the water of life without paying for it.” (Revelation 21-6 )

Come, whoever is thirsty; accept the water of life as a gift, whoever wants it.(Revelation 22-17 )
